Google Analytics for School Websites: The Basics

Google Analytics is a really useful tool for analysing how successful your school website is and has a real wealth of possibilities from basic tracking to extensive reports. In this article we’ll get you started with the basics.

Date Range

When accessing Google Analytics, in the top right of the screen is the facility for you to change the date range of the data you would like to view.

Audience Overview

This tells you how many times your school website has been accessed within the date range that you have set.


This is users that have had at least one session within the selected date range and includes both new and returning users.


This is the total number of pages viewed on your website.

Pages / Session

This is the average number of pages viewed during a single session.

Avg. Session Duration

This is how long on average, a person visiting your website stays on your website.

Bounce Rate

This is the percentage of single-page visits, which means how many people visit your site and leave again after visiting only one page. The lower the percentage the better!

% New Sessions

This is the percentage of your site visitors that are visiting for the first time.
